Is it just possible that when World War 2 ended and the entire European industrial sector was destroyed that perhaps it led to America becoming a dominant world economy and that this growing economy provided great opportunities for upward social mobility over the subsequent 50 years? Perhaps the issue is not so much with a generation but with the reality that China and other developing economies are catching up and that as our economy wanes in comparison to theirs that our standard of living will also decline. Britain in the 19th century was the predominant world economy and they never gained that predominance after WW2. Nations generally do not stay as economic power indefinitely. What the OP is starting to realize is that he/she may have a standard of living below their grandparents. Just because you are an American does not mean you are going to have a luxury lifestyle regardless of the stupid crap people post on social media. Would you be happier growing in Africa? The mileage you get out of those kWh is always going to fluctuate. Your car is less efficient when its traveling faster, air resistance is roughly the cube of speed after all. Then there are things like fast acceleration, AC usage, temperature's effect on the battery, etc. ICE vehicles are also impacted by most of these factors, though its not as noticeable because people usually only pay attention to the fuel gauge.
