Is it odd to have the first book in a series a collection of four short stories?

  1. This sounds quite interesting! As for whether it's odd - Sapkowski's The Witcher series started with short story collections and then evolved into the proper saga, so it's definitely been done. With some success, I would say.

  2. The Assassin's Blade from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas did this and I think thats a relatively "big" name.

  3. I was thinking this too, however, Assassin’s Blade was technically written fourth in the series and was intended as a prequel. I LOVE this series, but it took me a long time to get into it because I chose to read AB first and it was kinda boring. Written fourth, most people knew the MC and these stories were digging deeper into her character, which wasn’t the greatest as an intro to the whole series. When I recommend it to others, I recommend reading a couple chapters of the burst book, Throne of Glass, then go to AB, then hop back into TOG.
