Why do musicians often use fake names, but actors don’t?

  1. Actors regularly use fake names. Because the acting guilds will only allow one person to have a name many actors have had to change their names.

  2. Many actors change their name instead of using a fake one because while musicians are famous for their music, acting is more based on the person. It makes sense that actors would want a recognizable name they can use constantly.

  3. A few actors who use fake names: Vin Diesel (seems kinda obvious), Jamie Foxx, Natalie Portman, Whoopi Goldberg, Kirk Douglas, Michael Keaton (whose real name is Michael Douglas, but when he wanted to get a SAG card there was already a Michael Douglas who is, of course, Kirk’s son).

  4. MANY actors use fake names. Natalie Portman, Michael Keaton, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg and many more. I will say it is much less common now than when it was in the 40s and 50s. None of those actors used their real names.

  5. Maybe because their name is more special in music (a song is usually made by like one or 2 people/a band while a movie could have tons and tons of actors)

  6. Actors may use fake or altered names more than musicians do. Jamie Foxx's real name is Eric Bishop. He chose the name "Jamie Foxx" from his comedy days. Comedy Club managers on open mic nights would usually pick a bunch of guys and one or two women. Jamie made his name ambiguous so the managers would think he was female and put him on the list.
