The lonely furniture of Wilhelm's Portland Mausoleum(May2017)

  1. Haha. That chair in picture #6 is in my garage now. It’s a cool old chair and they threw it away a few years ago.

  2. Thank you so much! These particular photos are among my favorites, probably because I relate to the furniture. Sometimes broken & falling apart, sometimes comfy but empty, other times sturdy & utilitarian…

  3. I’m curious what the internment ceremony is like? If I had family there I’d visit regularly—it’s such a grand place.

  4. I went for the first time this year and it's definitely worth it to mark on your calendar and plan for next year!

  5. I'm really glad I went this year. It's one of the coolest things I've done in a few years to be honest. And I'm definitely going to go back next year and do it a couple days in a row.

  6. I got to check that place out for the first time this year and made a video about it. It's amazing how big the place is and how varied in style each of the floors and different wings are.

  7. Not sure if you noticed, but the room with the fountain was all infants and very young children. That was very jarring to me.

  8. Theres something about the second image that makes me really uncomfortable, like something from a Jan Svankmajer film. Bonus - you seen 'em.

  9. I really enjoy Švankmajer’s work. And yes, I seen ‘em—and often photo ‘em—glad you seen ‘em too. I might be tooooo comfortable with this photo: the enclave, cement floor, the cone, the disrepair yet orderly layout, the fan, and the Exit sign : just let me curl up & read there for a spell…..

  10. Love these. The furniture there spoke to me too. Did you use a tripod or a flash? I had a hard time in some of the really dark floors!

  11. Thank you! No tripod or flash—-just a Panasonic DMC-LX7 ,probably set to auto —-I like to see & photo,rinse/repeat without getting bogged down in gear. That said, I want to go back with my Panasonic DMC-G85 which should do better in low lighting. It’s tricky in there!

  12. Comparing your photos with mine, the first gallery image, the only thing they've changed since 2017 was they added another chair. Even the flowers are the same.

  13. My girlfriend at the time and I would spend the day drawing and sketching in there. Thank you for sharing the pictures.

  14. I feel ya—my sinuses clogged instantly in allergic reaction to the overall musty funkiness—-and blocked out the smell
