Trudeau affirms women's right to choose after leak of draft U.S. ruling overturning abortion rights

  1. I don't go to political rallies or protest, but if we start huffing any of this handmaid's tale paint up here I'm starting a pro choice convoy immediately

  2. This is more like opening the lid and taking a deep inhale; so far, they've been laughed out of the room by all the adults, but if they take the pander-to-the-lowest playbook and run with it much longer, we may have an actual problem.

  3. I'm not one to protest either. But as the father to a young girl. I will be on the streets trying to put an end to this madness If it looms in canada.

  4. If this ever happens in Canada I am getting my tubes tied the very next day. I’m on the fence about ever having children but I will absolutely NEVER run the risk of being forced to carry a child when I am not ready.

  5. I can’t believe that in numerous US states it’s illegal to get an abortion even if you’re raped, that’s absurd.

  6. One state tried to apply the death penalty for seeking an abortion. How in any conceivable way that counts as pro-life is beyond me.

  7. The US has been slowly sliding back into the theocratic middle-ages for a while now. It's ironic: they fought the taliban, now they're becoming the taliban.

  8. The rape or during the first month is truly absurd to me. Like if someone ask me to tell you when life begins exactly I couldn't give you an exact date. But it's definitely not in the first months and the life of the mother matter just as much. So why stop abortion if she's in danger?

  9. In a lot of places in Canada, it's incredibly difficult to access abortion services, even if you're raped. Some provinces only have a few places you can actually get an abortion, and a lot of people don't have the resources to travel hundreds of miles, and possibly stay overnight, to get the procedure.

  10. Gotta protect them rapists like Brock and Bowen Turner. Can't let these women have rights to remove the rapists DNA /s

  11. It takes a high level of misogyny to think you're a bigger boss of a woman's vagina than she is, but rapists and anti-abortionists are on the same page with that.

  12. I am sure that will be pulled out as an election promise to keep the Conservatives down. It is a wedge issue.

  13. Trudeau and the Liberals know that a large portion of the conservative base wants abortions banned, so by keeping that threat alive they ensure that people will always vote against the conservatives.

  14. A lot of people said “they would never do that” and “they’d never open that can of worms” despite clear opinions expressed by judges.

  15. It's a different issue in Canada with different reasoning, and we have already had a multi-term PM who was an anti-abortion evangelical conservative, and he never touched it.

  16. I think it’s unlikely that either a conservative majority or the Liberal senate are going to want to ban abortion.

  17. Given the facts that they are also against sex-ed, condom, they are not pro-life, they are anti-woman.

  18. Now might be a good opportunity for the LPC to actually define abortion. The Supreme Court in Morgantaler didn't make abortion legal full stop, they left it up to Parliament to define it. It's never been done, hence it is de facto legal. It can also be defined in a restrictive way.

  19. Abortions are healthcare - they’re required for a variety of reasons including lifesaving care. This stuff makes me nervous as the owner of a uterus, in a heterosexual relationship. Besides the sole fact that I support a woman’s right to choose, no questions asked, restricting abortion access and rights directly compromise my access to healthcare that I might require during a medical emergency in the future and that selfishly terrifies me. Use of abortion should be between a woman and her healthcare provider, and if we would like to discuss meaningful ways to decline abortion stats, might I suggest enthusiastically we fund juicy parental leave payments, increase even further our childcare spending to make childcare free for parents, and provide free birth control, better sexual education, and robust family planning programs to our youth.

  20. I know Trudeau isn’t always the best by any means and seems mostly performative, but it’s in these small moments like these I’m happy that he decides to immediately address and reassure the country across party lines, with other members of other parties.

  21. Something that we take for granted here is our sensible politicians. Are they perfect? No. Are they even mediocre? Unfortunately not always.

  22. I'm almost certainly not going to vote for him, but I agree. I like it when he's direct and honest, even when I disagree with him.

  23. I mean this stance Trudeau has taken is just standard to him. The problem is the fact that we still have to debate about this dumb shit is what distracts politics from some bigger problems.

  24. 70% of Americans are pro choice. This will do nothing but turn up voters in the mid terms in November. Most people are pro choice, it’s just the forced birthers are louder.

  25. So easy it really underscores how bad the States is fucking up. This has the same vibes as Trudeau saying “I obviously condemn Nazis” in the summer 2020, when Trump was making waves for refusing to say it.

  26. I don’t see the need to come out an clarify that the American courts don’t dictate law or policy in Canada. Who was this announcement for exactly?

  27. Now would be a great time for him to get around to forcing the New Brunswick government to follow the Canada Health Act with respect to abortion funding.

  28. They're terrified of being pro-choice while the PPC exists. Imagine Bernier scooping up all the SoCons and getting seats in parliament. I'm not a fan of the Cons but the thought of a PPC MP makes my skin crawl...

  29. If they come out and say this, they lose like 20% of their base. If they come out and say the opposite, the lose like 40% of their base.

  30. The majority of their politicians have made it their unspoken wet dream. I didn’t like Harper, but don’t doubt for a second he would have gone through with restricting it if it wasn’t so electorally self-defeating

  31. Why would they? This has nothing to do with domestic politics. In fact, tomorrow Trudeau might go on a rant about the rainforest. Canadians overwhelmingly support the right to chose.

  32. It’s amazing. This is the best thing that could possibly happen. We should call an election tomorrow and kick the shit out of Poilievre before he gets a chance to establish himself.

  33. If we want to seriously stop this type of shit from continuing to make its way into Canada (because a lot of it already has) we should just straight up ban Fox News from our air ways. The network is literally the mouth piece for the people directly responsible for this and they regularly spew regressive ideology and heavily biased opinions.

  34. I can't believe we are going to be about 6 months to a year away from actual people holding signs that say "Blame Canada" at anti abortion political events...

  35. Harper did it first. Immediately after forming gov't, he shut down any attempt to overturn the decisions on gay marriage and abortion.

  36. The US seems to really be going back into dark ages. How the fuck can some damn republican bureaucrats impose on women what they want to do with their bodies ? This country needs a serious revolution

  37. Edit your comment and add radical Christianity. How could you add Islam first and not the religion that US abortion laws were first solely based upon?

  38. As things are going now, the Canadian goverment can just say they're doing the opposite of what America does and they'd be in office forever 😂

  39. There's also plenty of quality abortion clinics in Mexico as well. Fuck the conservatives we'll just give all our abortion money to Mexico and Canada!

  40. It's good we have a strong leader at the federal level protecting a woman's right to choose. It would be nice if CPC mps would actually state their opinion.

  41. CPC MPs have stated their position. You can go look that position up through vote history or on shit tear sites like

  42. It’s been ruled as being protected in the charter. That’s already higher than any legislation the HOC can create. How many different ways do we need to make it legal? Even if the PCs want to change it, there is no way in hell they can make that change. The fear mongering is unreal. It’s legal, period, end of story.

  43. They possibly couldn't. Perhaps they could enact a prohibition for doctors to refuse to perform an abortion. That would be criminal law. Perhaps they could make health transfers conditional upon the provision of proper abortion services. Other than that, they would lack proper legislative jurisdiction.

  44. What's going on in the US is just a reminder that conservatives WILL use any opportunity they can to control women's bodies and reproductive health. It is beyond imperative that no conservative in Canada ever wins an election at any level of government ever again.

  45. Like those 5 years they had a majority and didn't, and during an era where restricting abortion was more politically popular than it is now?

  46. Huh? They’re simply saying (and it’s not even final) that each state can set their own rules, and the citizens of each state should elect state governor’s or representatives who will enact whatever rules the majority want.

  47. Always blows my mind how stupid people are to be so easily manipulated by fear every step of the way. None of this is on the table here in Canada, it’s just another opportunity for Trudeau to virtue signal and instill fear in his voter base for another wedge issue he gets to exploit in the next election(s).

  48. Does that mean anything like is "affirm" an actual legal thing the Prime Minister can do or is this just kind of a slow week in parliament?

  49. I was hoping I wasn't alone in my annoyance with our politicians once again importing U.S. culture war bullshit.

  50. Trudeau is a great champion of women’s rights when: 1) they agree with him and 2) the don’t disagree with him.

  51. It was legalized on the basis of the Charter, when the Supreme Court of Canada found that the Criminal Code prohibition violated section 7:

  52. The U.S. is one step away from the taliban running the show. Our border is in danger if the GOP comes into power again. It’s the end of a peaceful neighbour if they do.

  53. "The unborn are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."

  54. Yeah... Women who need abortions have that real problem to solve. Just because it's not a real problem for you, doesn't mean it's not a real problem.

  55. You can't terminate a pregnancy! How on Earth will we know for sure that you aren't carrying the reincarnated Jesus Messiah baby unless you carry it to term? 🤯

  56. Do you not find it strange that the very people that want to make abortion illegal- are the very same people that hate the child years later they come out as gay?

  57. It makes sense that its being overturned at the supreme court level, because its not really something that should have been decided at that level in the first place, which is the whole reason for this change. Instead it should be legislated under the normal process, not decided by the supreme court.

  58. This. Everyone is freaking out like they are going to ban abortions. This overturn would simply let each state decide their own abortion laws.

  59. I hope Canada has an underground abortion services for those who need it south of the border. Canada has its issues but the states are a weird mix of third world poverty and Silicon Valley money.

  60. Just an FYI, this doesn't mean abortion will be banned in the US. It means that individual states will determine thier own laws. Abortion will continue to be legal in most states.

  61. It's good to be brought up and thr CPc should show that they too support the freedom of female body autonomy.

  62. 8 hour waits in emergency rooms, and getting a family doctor is virtually impossible, but we can import abortions?

  63. No, we don’t have a right to an abortion in Canada. That’s not a legal right enshrined in our laws. You’d think the PM should know that. Of course, it’s PR stunt time so out he goes to practice his drama work I guess.

  64. Umm thanks Trudeau? Because we were all waiting for the PM of Canada to weigh in on the supreme court’s decision of another country that has zero impact on Canadians.

  65. There is a saying: when America sneezes, Canada catches cold. Often legal and political trends in the USA come up here or become popular with our Conservatives. Trudeau is merely reassuring Canadian women that we are safe.

  66. I know this is a Canada group, so some here won't quite understand the ruling (assuming this comes to pass). But please take a step back before instinctively downvoting me.

  67. It is too late because of all the racist bullshit in your electoral system. The US Senate is complete trash that values empy swaths of land over people. The Democrats don't have the votes because they can't even force a vote due to the filibuster.

  68. Or until a law is past preventing it there is nothing wrong with the status quo. Contrary to popular belief Canada =/= America and if they repeal Roe. V Wade it has no impact on us.

  69. LOL imagine preaching about a humans right to make a medical decision and then forcing people to get vaccinated. What an utter fucking hypocrite

  70. Blame Trudeau for "driving abortion in the passenger seat today and for the next 3 years" all you want, but social conservatives in Canada and the USA gave him the keys and the wheel.

  71. The only thing that needs to be affirmed is the right for Canadians to tell Trudeau he is a terrible PM and can fuck off.

  72. Sure it's been said a hundred times, but this wasn't an overturn of abortion rights. It was an overturn of a case that supported abortion rights. We should all agree that common law should be logically grounded. Abortion rights don't follow from the right to privacy. Imagine the slippery slope. This shouldn't be controversial. Abortion rights will be decided by any number of other cases, or by legislation.

  73. But.... can't Trudeau not actually affirm that? All it needs is more to vote against. I would like to think that wouldn't happen, but I don't feel like the PM can affirm anything, even in a majority if he doesn't have a popular opinion.

  74. American female/uterus owner here. I'm downright terrified. Any Canadians want to take me in? I'm a decent cook and I have 2 adorable pets.

  75. Bro I don't even think this debate should be brought up here right now when we have other problems to focus on, but that's just wrong I've straight up heard people say some women should keep they legs closed and things along those lines.

  76. He will never miss an opportunity to signal his virtue, but he's not "affirming" anything. It's already the law here for abortion to be legal.

  77. Any law is never guaranteed though, the number of CPC mps against abortion is crazy. They will try to ban abortion if the chance arises.
