Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade; states can ban abortion

  1. Why so many basic human rights in the US are court ruling from the 70s and not an actual law???

  2. The concurring opinion by Justice Thomas says in the future the court should also reconsider rulings that protected contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

  3. The concurring opinion explicitly states that they have a right to revisit the cases that legalised gay marriage and gay sex because they are now based on erroneous logic. Hold tight, because it will get a lot worse.

  4. “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment" -Judge Alito

  5. In fairness, Amendment IX has almost never been recognized to mean anything at any point in US history. It’s a “truism.”

  6. Wasn't this literally instantaneously the case in some places because some of these laws were still in place and merely not enforced because of the SCOTUS rulings that nullified them?

  7. Pro-life movement to pivot to advocating for affordable healthcare and paid maternity/paternity leave now that women are going to be forced to carry a pregnancy to term, right? Any day now?

  8. I know this is a rhetorical question, but I heard the leader of some pro-life movement on NPR that they’re only focusing on each state to continue outlawing abortion. So absolutely fuck no.

  9. They’ll go one of two ways, they’ll either hit it from the state level, banning it peicemeal or they’ll say fuck it, drop all pretenses of “State’s Rights” and push for a federal ban.

  10. The government can't tell you what you can do with your body... but also the government makes demands about what you can do with your body.

  11. Holy shit, it's that thing we all said was 100% going to happen that everyone laughed at and told us we were stupid and paranoid for thinking would happen.

  12. Now they can laugh at us and tell us we’re stupid and paranoid for thinking criminalizing contraception and homosexuality will be next.

  13. And in his own special little concurrence to the decision, Clarence Thomas recommends the court next eliminate rights to contraception, queer relationships, and gay marriage.

  14. At this point I’m convinced the United States government wants to watch the middle and lower class burn

  15. SCOTUS did exactly what they said they wouldn't do at the confirmation hearings for Amy Coney Barrett and Brett "tears in my beers" Kavanaugh.

  16. Just remember , we can’t tell anyone to get vaccinated because it’s telling them what to do with their body. But THIS is ok. I’m disgusted

  17. So all of the Republican SCOTUS nominees lied in their testimony at the confirmation hearings that Roe v. Wade is "settled law?" Interesting.

  18. This country is a joke. They tell us to overlook an attempted political coup and just accept our rights being stripped from us. God Bless the USA.

  19. Hey now, she's very disappointed in Kavy for misleading her on his statement of roe being settled law. She's making that frowny face super hard now.

  20. Less than a year ago I was somewhat bemused that politicians were even paying lip service to overturning roe v wade. It seemed like such settled law that how could anyone ever think it would be overturned. Doing so would absolutely trash the credibility of the supreme court and would never be allowed to happen.

  21. Fortunately the Right Wing has supported a robust social safety net (Medicaid, S-CHIP, food stamps, universal day care, universal pre-K etc)...

  22. Surely this will have no lasting effect in 15-20 years. Such as the massive crime drop in that timeframe after Roe v Wade was passed..

  23. In about 20-25 years we are going to see a nice little crime spike from all the unwanted children born because of this court.

  24. Gay rights are next. We are backsliding at such an incredible pace. Hell, they might even go for interracial marriages.

  25. I honestly didn’t think it was possible to see such progress be undone. And for what? It’s mind boggling

  26. Finland is giving every homeless person a home. Belgium announced a 4 day workweek along with Portugal. Belgium also gave employees the right to ignore their boss after work. Canada banned conversion therapy and upheld abortion rights. NZ raised their minimum wage and also banned conversion therapy. France is offering free contraception for young women and is also offering citizenship for frontline workers. Germany is about to legalize weed, give 2 million workers a raise, and reform their abortion laws. The Netherlands recently abolished the mandatory 5-day waiting period for women who want to get an abortion, now you can get an abortion immediately.

  27. The Netherlands recently abolished the mandatory 5-day waiting period for women who want to get an abortion. The government stated that it would be belittling to women to think they have not thought thoroughly about their decision prior to coming to an abortion clinic. Now you can get an abortion immediately.

  28. They are coming for LGBTQ rights, same sex marriage, contraceptives and interracial relationships next. It's written in the opinion. We aren't government by elected officials anymore. We have a runaway, partisan court of questionably optioned judges.

  29. Probably, and it will probably go exactly how they always do. People show up to protest, rich people pay the police to shoo the protesters off. Then everyone gives up because that ONE thing that we need to do to stop this; is also the ONE THING they have made impossible to talk about anywhere. It starts with a V.

  30. Just need to remember when you vote again that Republicans scared voters saying Dems were going to pack the Supreme Court... Then they preceeded to block Obama's nominee with a year left in his term and rush Trump's 3rd nominee in with 2 weeks left in his term

  31. Thomas in his concurring opinion says the court should reconsider Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell — the rulings that now protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

  32. Of course. Why should I be able to get medicine that prevents excessive bleeding due to fibroids in my uterus? Oh yeah. Because it makes me a slut.

  33. Anyone who thinks this will stop at Roe are fools. They'll strike down Loving and Brown if they get the chance.

  34. Conveniently leaving out Loving, the right to interracial marriage he actively enjoys, which is based on the same logic.

  35. Michigan is working to circumvent an old piece of legislation that automatically triggers, making abortion illegal with a SCOTUS decision like this. Abortion will be legal in Michigan (again) soon enough.

  36. Florida is not protecting abortion. July 1st new laws go into effect to restrict abortion to nothing after 15 weeks.

  37. I've lived in the US since I was 10. I am a dual citizen US and German. I've been in Germany for 6 weeks and am really liking it.

  38. Currently in the process of getting my American citizenship to have dual and kinda wondering if i made a mistake and wasted my money.

  39. I’m literally moving to NY tomorrow from Austin and the timing couldn’t be better. I’ll do my best to help y’all back home.

  40. The real problem with this is that it overturns a long-standing precedent with clearly political motives. If the SC can't uphold a consistent apolitical interpretation of the constitution based on precedent... then our system of government is absolutely broken.

  41. Our system is broken. The court was never meant to be this powerful. The president was never meant to have the broad spectrum of power that executive orders today have.

  42. “Why is it that most of the people who are against abortion are people you wouldn’t want to fuck in the first place?” -George Carlin

  43. Glad I live in a liberal state. This will just further polarize the country. Red states will get more conservative and blue states will get more liberal as anyone who has the means will migrate to blue states where they still have rights, leaving the religious right nutjobs to rule the red states unopposed.

  44. In which case Republicans will have permenant control of the federal government. Literally why they're doing this.

  45. The poverty class in red states are about to be trampled to death over the next generation or two. As state political majorities homogenize further, I can’t imagine the loss of rights these people will suffer. Poverty, healthcare, and education are going down the drain.

  46. I’m in a red state, Texas, and I have no fucking clue how I’d even move. Maybe request a lateral transfer to another office? Fuck. I’m afraid they’ll come after same-sex marriage next. Being a gay woman in Texas is… terrifying.

  47. I personally think that new laws banning people from traveling to have an abortion will be established in some states, eventually leading to a supreme court case challenging wether a state can regulate traveling to have an abortion.

  48. We're looking at a huge problem. People in blue states will "have access" to abortion but with the amount of people coming from red states, it's still going to be difficult to get one.

  49. And red states can respond by arresting anyone that shows signs of an abortion... or a natural miscarriage, since you can't tell the difference. But no need to give women the benefit of the doubt, it's not like they're real people

  50. Crazy how much damage one 4 year term could do. He probably didn’t steer the country this direction, but he definitely hit the turbo button. Fucked everything up for a generation.

  51. It wasn't just Trump... Let's not forget that a lot of this shit show was caused by Mitch McConnell.... Boycott Kentucky for voting him in.

  52. Damn dude, imagine being a pregnant 14 year old girl with nowhere to turn. I knew girls that would drink so much to kill the fetus. This is what it’s going to return to.

  53. This. Banning abortion would not stop people getting abortion. It’s just gonna make the methods way more dangerous

  54. The slightly good news, medically induced abortions through pills is pretty easy and safe to do at home,. But that's assuming you know how to find it online.

  55. I better see all you Pro-Lifers out there helping women with their pregnancies and toddlers because you were so concerned for their wellbeing…

  56. To understand how chilling this is, this now sets precedent for other rulings to be overturned such as same sex marriage, interracial marriage, states sodomy laws, contraception, and so on.

  57. That's fucked. Quick, USA, take the women's rights to vote away too. Oh and bring back slavery, prohibition, kill the gays! Take it back over 100 years. Fucking Jokers. Why religion is allowed to make laws in that country is beyond my comprehension. Especially such a flawed and contradictory mythology too.

  58. Alright who can recommend a state to move to where abortion will likely remain safe? I don't even think I'd personally want an abortion but I know my state's politicians, next they'll want to ban abortions even when the mothers life is at risk and then start investigating miscarriages. Fuck that shit. I'm out.

  59. Look at the map of where abortions are now going to be illegal. This is going to produce so many new future dumbass republicans. Its fucking genius.

  60. This should be a reminder to vote in general but coming up voting in your local elections will never be more important.

  61. Each day I wake up more sad, angry, and confused. The majority of people disagree with the ruling and here we are. Fuck this country.

  62. They won't let you do that either. I'm 43, no kids, they won't tie my tubes because "you might change your mind." They did however schedule my husband for a vasectomy 5 days after his consultation and all he had to do was read a pamphlet and state out loud that he understood he wouldn't be able to have children after the procedure.

  63. Well, if anything came from this it’s that precedent doesn’t matter anymore for court decisions.

  64. This is after only 2 years of a conservative majority. We've got decades ahead if everyone continues to sit back and shrug their shoulders.

  65. Well justice / insurrectionist Thomas said the court should review all privacy related cases so gay marriage, contraception and others are on notice

  66. Hey so we just got through a global pandemic and a president who tried to overthrow our democracy to stay in power...now seems like a great time for some big changes!

  67. It’ll be illegal to have an abortion in about 50 percent of states in a week. Including if you were raped. This is a dark day.

  68. And if anyone comes along to say "But we won't force women to carry a dangerous pregnancy!" don't forget, they're lying. Ohio and Missouri already tried to prohibit abortions in the case of ectopic pregnancy.

  69. Actually, pretty much immediately. Loads of states had already passed trigger laws that will ban most abortions the moment the SC decision was made =\

  70. To all those who said the worries about exactly this happening were alarmist, panicking, silly, overwrought, pearl-clutching - go fuck yourselves.

  71. For the people cheering that babies will now be saved … what do you think is going to happen to these “saved” babies that are born into unwanted homes ???? Like please answer this because all I see is deflection and taunting by you guys

  72. FUck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck

  73. The implications of this are far-reaching and horrifying. I will be genuinely shocked if we don't see more groups like Jane's Revenge pop up and be more direct in their actions, especially as the effects of this decision on people with uteruses become more (as if they aren't already) and more visible.

  74. Someone else pointed out the arguments used for obergefell and roe were the same used in the precedent protecting interracial marriage.
